Walk Overview
This is a most rewarding short walk with wonderful views at the top
of the Wasdale giants like Scafell, Great Gable and Kirk Fell. The initial
walk starts of on a steepish stony path that gives way eventually to grassy
moorland with clearly defined grass trods to follow
From off the A565 coastal road we made our way towards Eskdale Green and then
on to Dalegarth Station. The parking was (at the time of writing) £6 for all day with
plenty of spaces
Starting the walk from the station car park. Out of the gate and turn left
Head down towards the pub and prepare to turn left
On reaching the Brook House Inn, turn left
Follow the main road through the Hamlet towards a small bridge
Carry on over the bridge and head towards a hand gate
Through the gate and follow the stony track
Follow the rough ground towards a wall. From here its a strenuous walk
over an uneven stony path
The start of the main track to the open fell side
The track eventually levels off on reaching some disused huts
On the higher ground veer right past the old huts
At this point when you can clearly see Whin Rigg and Illgill Head in front of
you, the path levels off considerably and turns from stone to grassy moor land
The trod is very easy to follow. This is good walking
Look out for a path that branches off to the right. Aim for the left hand
shoulder of the high ground pictured right of centre
Looking East towards Harter Fell from the track
At this point we have just reached the shoulder of the high ground we was
aiming for and for the first time Boat How comes in to view on the right
Follow the track round to the right to aim for the gentler slope up to the summit
Passing the craggy Southern face of Boat How
