Walk Overview
Having completed the Wainwright 214 summits challenge in 2023 on Great Gable that would not and never signal the end of Fell walking in Lakeland. After Sue had her second knee replacement in 2022, she was very keen to protect it by no longer pounding up and down the more arduous fells, so we decided to have an attempt at the Wainwright outlying fells and complete the full set so to speak. We could not have started on a better fell, that of Irton Pike. A very gentle walk with unbelievable views down to Wasdale Head and a very comfortable grassy summit
The car park at the start of the walk on the Santon Bridge to Eskdale Green Road
From the car park turn right up the road following it northwards for about 100 yards
Very soon on the right take the path that appears which skirts the base of Irton Pike
Setting out on the path that rises gently through the woods
Spud ready and rareing to go
Looking right across to Harter Fell from the path
As we journey up the path we pass a large area of deforestation
Further on up the path and a track emerges on the left, ignore this and keep straight on towards the gate
The gate at the end of the path. The path that emerges immediately on the left is the route to take, however its well worth a diversion through to get an early view of Wasdale Head
The path that appears on the left cuts through an area of Pine trees and follows the line of the fence
Looking back to the entrance of the track
Keep with the path that runs parallel with the fence until a small stile is reached
Suddenly, the view opens up with the marvellous sight of the fells round Wasdale Head
On reaching the stile, turn left and follow the path through the copse
Very soon, the exit of the wooded area appears and the first sight of Irton Pike summit
