Walk Overview

A circular walk from Braithwaite that takes in the breathtaking scenery that the Coledale
valley has to offer. Be prepared for a very steep pull up to Grisedale Pike.

The start of the walk

From the Royal Oak pub in Braithwaite, take the Whinlatter road that veers
off to the right

The wooden gate

As you travel up the road a small and indistinct path opposite this entrance to
Greengarth is the start point for this walk

The path towards Kinn

After navigating through thick heather bushes at the start, the path becomes
more distinct as it heads towards Kinn

The Fence

Once the fence is crossed the route then becomes very clear

The full extent of the path to Grisedale Pike now comes in to view

The view across the valley

namely Eel Crag and Sail

The old Mine road

The level part of the track

This section of the path is very pleasant walking; however things
are going to get a whole lot steeper

Wainwrights sketch of the path

The really steep part of the ascent that Wainwright drew in Book 6.
Hardly changed at all.

The old Mine works

Looking to the head of the valley and the Force Crag mineworks is
dwarfed by Eel Crag and Sail

The summit cairn on Grisedale Pike

After a lengthy tussle against gravity I reach the summit cairn on Grisedale Pike

Looking towards Hopegill Head

The second Fell of the day - Hopegill Head. Very easy walking to
follow the path round

I`m not sure how you get a pushbike up but fair play to the bloke

Approaching the summit of Hopegill Head

The path skirts very close to the edge

The path to the summit can be as adventurous as you want to make it

and the North tower of Mellbreak. Prepare to make a left turn

Gasgale Gill

The path to the next summit (Eel Crag) is picked up at the bottom of the
Hause and for a spell runs parallel with Gasgale Gill

The path to Eel Crag

The path leads up towards a cross roads and here, takes the left fork
that carries on to the summit of Eel Crag

From the summit I now head North to tackle the return leg of the Horseshoe.
