Walk Overview

The start of our week up in Ambleside. The weather wasnt promising so we plumped
for a short and simple walk up a very popular fell at the southern end of Lake
Windermere, that of Gummers Howe. In good weather the views are amazing but
on this occaision the weather Gods were against us

The start point of the walk from the A592 near Newby Bridge

From Bowness, take the A592 towards Newby Bridge and near Fell Foot take
a sign posted left turn and follow a minor road up to an area where there
is free parking both on the road or in a designated car park

The gate in the wall

Within a couple of hundred yards or so a gate on the left gives access
to a path

An information board about the cattle

Through the gate and an information board gives more detail of the Hardy Luing
cattle that have been introduced to the fell and which you will almost
certainly bump into on the way to the summit

The path climbs gently throgh a wooded area

Approaching the crags

At the start of the summit approach the path leads to a belt of crags.
These can be avoided by veering right

The Bull

Att this point we bumped into this fellow and decided to swerve him
whilst he was taken up with his dinner

Approaching the summit

So as to avoid the Bull we took a slightly steeper track up towards the summit approach

The summit cairn

Fairly quickly the fine summit cairn comes into view
