Walk Overview
A glorious day to Fell walk. The significance of this walk, apart from reaching 117
Wainwright summits, would be to complete Book 1 and also to add 4 new summits
to Sue`s count now standing at 116. The chosen route is not outlined in the
Guide Book, but one I sort of worked out whilst walking to Sheffield Pike. The track
from Glencoyne is excellent and allows you to gain height gently as you head towards
Sticks Pass near Nick Head. This route opens up access to a multitude of lofty fells.
On the A592 just North of Glenridding take the path adjacent to a Bus stop
that leads into Glencoyne Woods
The path leads past a Farm building and crosses a cattle grid
The views open up pretty quickly after little height is gained. The path leads to a row
of Miners cottages at Seldom Seen
Approaching the cottages. The steep Western flank of Sheffield Pike comes into view.
The path follows a stone wall that passes the cottages and runs along the base of the Pike
The Miners cottages at Seldom Seen
The track follows the line of the stone wall as it climbs gently towards the Sticks Pass
First view of Hart Side
Take the left hand gate through the stone wall
The path swings left at the top of the Col. Right in front is Stybarrow Dodd
Having swung left and turned the corner, keep a look out for a small stone track
that leads onto a grass path that will skirt the base of Nick Head as it swings
round right towards Hart Side
Looking back to Sheffield Pike
The track across the grass is faint but discernable. The aim is to keep right as
it swings round to the ridge line of Hart Side
Looking back down the valley and Glencoyne Beck snaking its way to Ullswater
The track becomes abundantly clear and leads straight towards the summit
Approaching the summit of Hart Side

Sue, Me and Jones (the Bastard) on the summit of Hart Side
We lunched on the summit during which we had the great pleasure of meeting and
talking with Ken from Derbyshire who, during his week long stay in Lakeland had
completed some very lengthy walks, this being no exception. He discussed the merits
of 15 years retirement which for me is something on the horizon. It was certainly
very insightful speaking with him
