Walk Overview
A notable walk for us in that it marked the penultimate fell in our 116 Outlying
Fells journey. The first two thirds of the walk is through the truly beautiful Blengdale
Forest, the final trudge up to the summit is dreary, pathless and if you are not
careful, a bit of a bog fest
On the A595 take the turning off for Gosforth and drive through the quaint village
towards the start of the Blengdale Forest. A decent free to use car park awaits that
is right at the very start of the walk
Set off up the track towards the forest towards a cattle grid
Cross the cattle grid and keep on the wide track as it makes a right turn
towards the first of two bridges that cross the River Bleng
Crossing the first bridge
The track now starts to climb gently
At the junction keep left and head towards a barred gate
Go through the gate and follow the track as it swings to the left
Ignore the grass track branching off to the left
Approaching the second bridge
Over the bridge follow the track as it branches off to the right
A narrow grassy path leads through some fir trees and emerges onto the
main forest path
Upon reaching the the main Forest path turn left
The main forest path leads to a gate that emerges from the wooded area
Through the gate and onto the open fell side
The path swings left and heads towards Scalderskew Farm
Heading towards the Farm and prepare for a sharp left turn at the wall
Ponsonby Fell comes into view. At this point leave the main track and
head right through the metal gate to start the climb up to the summit of the Fell
At this point there is no right or wrong way to take. Its pathless tramping over
thick and springy grass with the occaisional boggy parts. Just head for the high ground
