Walk Overview

Our first walk of 2017 and approximately 5 weeks after Sue`s operation. The week
had brought us Storm Doris and this day was forecast to be the only decent day
sandwiched between the bad weather. Given it would be Sue`s first walk out since
her surgery, we decided on a gentle modest height to start back with to test her
recovery process. This is a great family walk for all ages, nothing too strenuous
with some cracking views of Buttermere and Crummock Water on top. A really
great way to start 2017.

The start of the walk

The walk starts at the NT car park behind the Bridge Hotel at Buttermere. At the
time of writing it was £6.50 for all day parking. (NT Members go free). Here Sue
Ste and Jones (the Bastard) are ready for the off.

Looking towards High Crag and Haystacks

Out of the car park and turn right. Here peeping over the top of a row of cottages
are Haystacks (l) and High Crag (r)

The path branching off the main road

Within ten yards over the road a path on the left branches off that runs parallel
with the row of cottages towards a gate that gives access to the open fell side

The open fell side

Out on to the open fell side now and there are a number of paths to choose.
The central and right hand ones head towards the base of Whiteless Breast and
even further on to the Sail Pass crossing into the Newlands Valley. We take
the left hand path that heads towards Low Bank

Heading towards Low Bank

The grass path is easy to follow and swings left towards Low Bank

Over the first tower and a path skirts the Southern flank of the ridge that
avoids any further rock handling

Post walk debrief in The Lily

As usual, our post walk debrief was in The Lily in Ambleside. We had the good
fortune of the company of Simon Ross and his wife Emma who were on a weekend
break in the area. Simon is a regular DJ on Liverpool`s Radio City 2
http://rossieonline.co.uk

Simon is currently in training for his next White Collar Boxing event. He admitted
to apologising every time he lamps one of his opponents, but to date has an
unbeaten record so he must be doing something right. It was a real pleasure
to share your company even if Emma did think that Jones had a cob on with her at first!
