Walk Overview
Not many dry days during a week long stay in Ambleside. Today was Sue`s
birthday and thankfully a dry day and perfect conditions for a gentle yomp
up Sale Fell in the North West region near Bassenthwaite Lake.
Follow the A66 towards Workington and just at the Northern edge of Bassenthwaite
Lake follow the signs on the left towards the Pheasant Inn. A single track road from
behind the Pub leads onto the start of the walk just a quarter of a mile before
St. Margarets` Church. There is ample free parking at the road side.
The wooden gate leads to the start of the track
Initially the track leads through an area of thick Gorse bushes
Within minutes of climbing the track leads out to an area of grass and a
conveniently placed bench
The path leads to an old gate post
Passing St Margarets` Church
Keep on the track which heads towards the Western ridge of the Fell
The stone wall on the right indicates that shortly it will be time to turn
left and start to climb the West ridge of the Fell
At the point at which the path splits, take the left hand fork
Further on upon reaching the next fork in the path take the right hand track
Looking back to Ling Fell
There are no navigational issues from this point, just follow the grass path. Slightly
further up and the Skiddaw range of Fells start to come into view
Higher still and the path weaves its way between several small hillocks

A belt of rain draws in towards us
Looking towards Bassenthwaite Lake and Binsey in the background
We journeyed down the South East face of the Fell for a variation to the walk.
From this aspect the slopes are steeper and would be a different prospect to climb
Just before we get back to the car we take a brief rest at the bench
as it would be rude not too
