Walk Overview

A small jaunt from a convenient location just off the A591. Stone Arthur is effectively
a subsidiary extenstion of Great Rigg (part of the Fairfield Horseshoe). A very
pleasant fell top with rewarding views for very little effort to get there

The car park at the Swan Hotel

From the A591 towards Keswick turn right at the Swan Hotel and follow the road round
from the Pub car park where there is space for several cars to park freely. The walk
starts via the footpath sign posted for Greenhead Gill and Alcock Tarn

The foot path

Starting off on the footpath

The sign post

After a short distance a signpost clearly marked for Stone Arthur prompts you
to turn left onto a stony track

The stepped track

The track is stone pitched to assist with its steepness and navigates through
a dense area of bracken

The overgrown path

The path looks overgrown but is quite easy to follow

The gap in the wall

Further up at the gap in the wall turn sharp right

The stepped path

The path climbs yet more steeply for a short distance

The path levels off and then drops down to cross an unamed Gill. Take the path

The Typhoon aircraft

The peace and tranquility is broken momentarily by the Eurofighter (Typhoon)
on low level manoeuvers

Taking in the views

On the way to the summit

At this junction take the path on the right to head towards the summit

The summit approach

The summit of Stone Arthur veers round to the left. Don`t be confused by the higher
ground on the right which is the connecting ridge to Great Rigg
